Volunteer The Hague

No Dutch? No problem.Β

Volunteer The Hague is the largest volunteer platform for internationals in the Netherlands. The project connects internationals with a volunteer job board with hundreds of vacancies, a talent scan for skills and interests, a newsletter and podcast and regular Mix and Match networking events and workshops. NL Cares offers more flexibile volunteering opportunities, at a time that suits you.

Volunteer with the international community

ACCESS is a good place to start: a not-for-profit organisation that has been helping internationals settle in the Netherlands for over 40 years, run by 140 volunteers from more than 40 nationalities. With its main office in The Hague and helpdesk at The Hague International Centre, it is deeply rooted in the region. National clubs, study associations, career-related networks like Female Ventures, JobOn and international NGOs also welcome volunteers and offer a ready-made network of people who know exactly what it means to build a life in a new country.

Why volunteer?

Volunteering lets you stand out as a candidate for future career opportunities. It shows that you have a sense of passion, determination, and want to make impact.Β

  1. 1

Build your skills in a Dutch working environment

Volunteering gives you hands-on experience in a Dutch workplace setting. You develop new skills, strengthen existing ones, and get a feel for how organisations in the Netherlands operate. It is also one of the most natural ways to practise Dutch in everyday situations and get to know local culture from the inside.

  2. 2

Strengthen your CV for the Dutch job market

Dutch employers value candidates who show initiative and stay active during career transitions. Volunteer experience fills gaps in your CV, gives you concrete examples to use in interviews, and signals that you are engaged with your new environment rather than waiting on the sidelines.

  3. 3

Grow your network in the Netherlands

Volunteering is a networking experience as it introduces you to new people and organisations, expanding your professional circle. These connections often lead to valuable insights, collaborations, or even direct career opportunities which would otherwise stay hidden.Β

  4. 4

Support your wellbeing while you settle in

Finding a job in a new country takes time and can be frustrating. Contributing to a cause you care about gives you structure, social contact and a sense of purpose during that period. Whether you are based in The Hague, Rotterdam, Delft or Leiden, there are organisations nearby that welcome international volunteers.

  5. 5

    Earn credible references

Supervisors and colleagues can become references, and a strong recommendation from a respected local organisation carries real weight when you are new to the job market here. Doing good work in a volunteer role builds your local credibility and gives future employers someone to call.Β

Make sure you meet the conditions if you are considering volunteering:Β

  • Volunteering is in the public interest, not-for-profit and cannot replace paid work. You have a maximum monthly compensation of €220 per month.
  • For some non-EU nationals a work permit may be required (TWV vereist on the residence permit document). Study permits are exempt nowadays. Asylum seekers may volunteer, but the not-for-profit organisation needs to apply for a volunteer permit.Β
