Europe's hub for industrial decarbonisation
South Holland is at the heart of one of Europe's largest energy transitions. Home to the Port of Rotterdam, the largest port in Europe, and the energy-intensive greenhouse agriculture sector in Westland, South Holland is transforming its economy to a low-carbon future. The region is investing heavily in offshore wind integration, hydrogen networks, electrification and sustainable heat.
The energy transition is happening across South Holland at every level, with innovative companies such as Alquion, Aquabattery and SmartPort  developing energy storage and smart infrastructure solutions, while larger multinationals and regional infrastructure networks help bring these innovations to scale. This creates exciting opportunities for professionals looking to make a direct impact on climate and sustainability.
Where innovation meets scale
South Holland combines world-class research and innovation with large-scale energy projects. Leading universities, applied research institutes and innovation hubs such as as Campus@Sea, TU Delft, TNO, The Green Village and YES!Delft collaborate with start-ups, scale-ups and large multinationals to test, validate and scale technologies such as offshore energy, hydrogen, batteries, smart grids and sustainable infrastructure.
Many of these innovations are then deployed in the region's industrial and maritime cluster, creating a unique environment where new technologies move quickly from research to real-world impact.Â

Geothermal and sustainable heat
South Holland is one of Europe's leading regions for geothermal energy, driven by demand from greenhouse horticulture, cities and industry. Projects such as Geothermie Delft, developed by TU Delft, Gaia Energy and EBN, advance research into geothermal technology, while the region's strong ecosystem creates opportunities for engineers and energy specialists. This work is supported by The International Geothermal Association, located in The Hague.

Offshore wind
The North Sea is becoming a major source of renewable energy, and South Holland is at the heart of this growth. Supported by the Port of Rotterdam, companies including Van Oord and IQIP help deliver offshore wind projects from construction through maintenance. With ambitious targets, a strong maritime sector and circumstances that are beneficial for commercialising offshore wind technology at scale, the region offers exciting careers in renewable energy and engineering.
Hydrogen economy
(Low carbon) hydrogen is expected to play a key role in decarbonising industry, transport and shipping. South Holland is developing one of Europe's most advanced hydrogen ecosystems, with major projects already under way, including a 32-km hydrogen pipeline in the Port of Rotterdam. The region offers opportunities across the full hydrogen value chain, from research and engineering to operations and project development.
Blue economy
The blue economy focuses on sustainable growth linked to the ocean and its resources. It includes areas such as marine energy from seas and rivers, ecological projects like artificial reefs, and sustainable aquaculture such as seaweed farming. Through support from hubs such as Campus@Sea, innovators including SolarDuck and the Buccaneer community are developing and testing new solutions for sustainable ocean industries.
Energy systems and digital tech
The transition to renewable energy requires smarter and more flexible energy systems. Companies such as Aquabattery and Whiffle are developing solutions in energy storage, smart grids and forecasting, with support from innovation hubs including YES!Delft and The Green Village. This creates opportunities for software developers, data scientists and energy-system specialists.
Carbon capture and storage
South Holland is helping lead Europe's industrial decarbonisation efforts through carbon capture and storage (CCS). Flagship projects such as Porthos, developed by the Port of Rotterdam Authority, Gasunie and EBN, are creating new infrastructure to reduce industrial emissions.
